Hi! I’m Kyle, and I’m really passionate about language learning that’s fun and exciting for everyone.
I’ve discovered that for me, this means listening to lots of great music to improve my listening skills, and then having tons of conversations with native speakers to work on the spoken language.
Music and conversation are pretty universal aspects of the human experience, and I started this blog to encourage people to find the songs and conversation partners that inspire them to listen and speak. A lot.
I know that my exact approach won’t work perfectly for everyone, because we all have our own personal interests and learning styles. So I always encourage people to start out with their own passions, and pursue content based on that.
A core principal of Hear Listen Speak is that most language education approaches this topic the wrong way: as just another subject to be taught traditionally, learned through rote memorization and repetition.
We jump right into word lists and flash cards, cerebral grammar discussions, and conjugation charts. I find this to be mind-numbingly boring, discouraging, and highly ineffective, even very counterproductive.
Because languages, as spoken naturally, just don’t work like that. True language learning and mastery happens through extensive exposure, strong emotional and interpersonal connections, and eventual acquisition.
I’ve been teaching foreign languages for years, and something I’ve noticed is that the vast majority of my students are not looking for a traditional teacher who assigns them homework and grades their sentences.
No, most people are really just looking for a friend to talk to them, get to know them, show interest in their life and family and passions, and of course also help them to improve their language skills along the way.
So I’ve developed a method of language coaching rather than teaching – think of me as a personal trainer for your language learning journey.
I can’t teach you a language – you have to do all the heavy lifting.
But I am here to help guide you along your personal path towards becoming an excellent language learner, who instinctively and intuitively speaks with a great accent and wows native speakers in conversation.
This is not an easy or quick journey. It will take a truly ridiculous amount of time to become reasonably fluent in another language.
But I know and truly believe that this is by far one of the most valuable, life-changing, mind-expanding things we can do with our time.
So get to thinking:
How can you combine your personal passions in life with a language you really want to learn?
What can you listen to extensively, training your ears to hear its sounds?
Who can you talk to, someone patient who will laugh along with you when you make mistakes?
There are endless possibilities, and the whole world is open to you if you make the time and dedicate yourself to this lifelong learning.
I can’t wait to see how far you go!
